One of the common cause of swollen feet during pregnancy is hypertension.  Most people refer to hypertension as high blood pressure. High blood pressure if not treated leads to swollen feet and other complications. In pregnancy, these complications are called pre-eclampsia. Pre-eclampsia is a medical emergency because if not treated it progresses to eclampsia.

Signs of  High blood pressure in pregnancy (Pre-eclampsia)

The three main signs that someone has Pre-eclamsia are

  1. High blood pressure (above 140/90 mmHg)
  2. Swollen feet
  3. Protein in urine

When an expectant mother has the first two signs, a medical examination with a gynaecologist (A doctor specialising in the care for expectant mothers) is highly recommended.

The medical examination will confirm if the urine has traces of protein.

What happens if high blood pressure during pregnancy is left untreated

If left untreated, pre-eclampsia affects other organs like the liver, kidneys and the brain.

This can lead to loss of consciousness and seizures/fits/convulsions. This level of severity is called eclampsia.
